Dr. William "Bill" VanMeter, 74, died Saturday, Jan. 26, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A gathering of friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, in Ames.

William "Bill" VanMeter was born May 4, 1933, in Lincoln, Ill., the son of William and Bertha May Taylor VanMeter. He married Beverly Barr. He later married Karin C. Sikora Jan. 24, 1981 in Ames.

He earnd a bachelor's degree in liberal arts-biology from Knox College and earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy at Drake University before entering Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood Ill., where he earned a doctorate in pharmacology in 1970.

He was professor emeritus of Pharmacology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. He received several citations and awards, including Mead-Johnson Undergraduate Research Award from Drake University, Dean's List of Academic Excellence at Drake University, full member of the Graduate Faculty at ISU, Cardinal Key Award for Meritorious Service at ISU, visiting professorships at Loyola University, University of Maryland and Drake University, and Faculty Improvement at Magill University School of Medicine in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

He had memberships and associations with Society of Neurosciences, Delaware Chapter of Society of Neurosciences, American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and IPA (Intergovernmental Personnel Act) twice. He had extensive publications.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Karin VanMeter, of Ames; two daughters, Christine VanMeter (Josh Hale), of Ames, and Dr. Susan Gallagher, of Denver, Colo.; one son, Andrew William VanMeter, of Ames; two grandchildren, Anne and Kegan; two cousins, Lynn VanMeter and Kent VanMeter, of Texas; and his first wife, Beverly.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mary Greeley Foundation Israel Family Hospice House or to the VanMeter family.
