THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, January 30, 2008.
Jane S. Benbrook, 87, of Ames, died Sunday, Jan. 27. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. Johns by the Campus Episcopal Parish, 2338 Lincoln Way, in Ames.
Jane S. Benbrook was born in Alton, Ill., attended her first year at Shurtleff College and graduated from Iowa State College with a bachelor's degree in home economics. She was a member of Tri Delta Sorority and Phi Upsilon Omicron home economics honorary.
She was home economist for Iowa Electric Light and Power in Marshalltown and was a Civil Air Patrol spotter for scrap metal. After training at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., she graduated as a Navy ensign. She was stationed in Washington, D.C., and worked in the Code Rooms.
After the war, she taught preschool, was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, a substitute teacher and creative writer, a volunteer for "Gray Ladies," worked for IBM, organized tours and social events, and was an avid bridge player, camper and genealogy researcher. She spent every summer with family at her beloved Ten Mile Lake in Minnesota.
Devoted wife and loving mother, she is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Stan; one daughter, Susan and husband, Mahmood Seyala; grandson, Layth and wife, Suzanne; grandson, Nazar; and great-grandsons, Caleb and Aidan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Warderman and Mary Edna Stallings, and her brothers, Ward and Jim.
