Wesley Edmund Carlson was born March 14, 1920, near Beresford, S.D., to Eddie and Alma (Benson) Carlson. He graduated from Beresford High School and participated in the Dalesburg Baptist Church. He worked the family farm and enjoyed singing and competing in softball and horseshoe tournaments with his boyhood friends.

He married Doris Lucille Twedt June 20, 1948, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Following their marriage, they lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he worked with his brother-in-law as a homebuilder. Later, they also had an automobile and appliance dealership in Sheldon. The young family then lived in Guthrie Center before moving to the Cambridge-Alleman-Slater-Huxley area, where their children were raised.

Wes and Doris lived in Huxley for 29 years in a home they built, and were active members of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church. His employment as a carpenter, salesman and auctioneer was followed by a 20-year career with Standard Oil as a crop manager until he retired. In retirement, he enjoyed feeding the birds in his well-kept yard. In 2004, they moved to the Mill Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Doris; one son, Duane (Anne), of Waterloo; two daughters, Gloria (Rick) Anderson, of Ankeny, and Cheryl (Bob Mills) Carlson, of Grimes; seven beloved grandchildren, Eric (Catherine) Carlson, Christine Carlson, Nick Anderson, Jason (Jessie) Anderson, Kacie Anderson, Garrett Acua and Colton Mills; five treasured great-grandchildren, Caleb, Samuel, Abigail, Isabelle and Madison; and one sister, Joyce (Alden) Lundquist, of Beresford, S.D.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gary; and two brothers, Lester and Evan.

The family requests memorials to be given to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater is in charge of arrangements.
