Jean Elaine Eichhorn Hulse, 76, of Fort Dodge, died January 4, 2008 at her home.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 14, at First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge with the Rev. Mark Haverland officiating. Visita-tion will be held from 3:00 ? 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Gunderson Funeral Home. Following the burial in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, the family will meet with friends at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada, Iowa.
Jean Elaine Eichhorn, the daughter of Luella (Fischer) and Lawrence Eichhorn, was born on January 14, 1931 in Bismarck, ND. Her family operated a grain elevator in Lehr, ND where Jean grew up active in her school and church activities. In 1946, they moved to Denver, CO where Jean graduated from Denver East High School in 1948. That fall she enrolled at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, graduating in 1952 with a BA degree in Elementary Education. While Jean was at Westmar, she met her husband Marv Hulse who was a ministerial student. They were married in Denver, CO, on August 15, 1952 and then moved to Naperville, IL.
Jean taught for three years at Bardwell Elementary School in Aurora, IL, while her husband attended Evangelical Theological Seminary. In 1955, Jean and Marv returned to Iowa where they served pastorates in the Iowa Evangelical United Brethen and United Methodist Conference for 41 years. The pastorates they served included Mason City Grace, Davenport Faith, Nevada First, Des Moines Immanuel and Sidney/Thurman. They moved to Fort Dodge in 1983 when Marv became Director of Admissions at Friendship Haven. During their years in the ministry, Jean taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, directed Children's Music Programs and played the piano and organ for many church events. Jean was a substitute teacher and held several offices in the PTA organizations at her children's schools. She was very active in Church Women United and each of the United Methodist Women's circles at their churches. Jean was a member of First United Methodist Church and Julia/Lydia Circle. She w! as a member of PEO for 33 years and belonged to Chapter IM in Fort Dodge.
Jean is survived by her husband of 55 years, Marv; daughter Janet and son-in-law Greg Matthews of Olathe, KS; son David Hulse of Hanor, Vietnam; grandchildren Sarah Jean Matthews and Paul Matthews of Olathe, KS; sister and brother-in-law Joann and Byron Bowsher of Englewood, CO; nephew Bob Bowsher of Lakewood, CO and niece Linda Leisegang of Littleton, CO.
