Martin Martinson, of Ames, died today at Israel Family Hospice House.

Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home.

Martin (Marty) R. Martinson, 79, of Ames, died Thursday, Jan. 3, with the family present at Israel Family Hospice House following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Adams Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Bethesda Lutheran Church. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date.

Martin R. Martinson was born Feb. 15, 1928, in rural Hamilton County to Elmer and Ulli (Rasmussen) Martinson. He lived and attended school in Jewell, Story City and Roland. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1949 and then was recalled from the Naval Reserve to active duty in 1951 for 18 months.

On Dec. 9, 1950, he married Emma Jacobs, of Story City, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in the Ames and Huxley area all of their 57 years of married life.

He enjoyed a long career in construction. He was employed by Overland Builders from 1955 to 1973, and then with Story Construction Co. from 1973 until his retirement in 1993. Even after retirement, he kept busy working for Habitat for Humanity and on numerous projects for family and friends. He was skilled in woodworking and many friends and family have beautiful pieces of furniture built by Martin. He attended Pleasant Grove Church.

He is survived by his wife, Emma; daughter, Rose Anne (Ron) Zagar, of Ames; sons Richard, of Johnston, and Jeffrey, of Houston, Texas; and two granddaughters, Danielle and Jessica, of Johnston.

He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis; his parents, Elmer and Ulli; and four brothers, Henning, Harold, Harry and Arthur.
