Katherine (Kay) Phelps Reddick, 88, died Saturday, Dec. 29, at Northcrest Health Care Center in Ames. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, in the Northcrest Green Room. Burial of the cremains will be July 2 in Evergreen Cemetery in Canton, N.Y.
Katherine Phelps Reddick was born Feb. 7, 1919, in Henderson, N.Y., to Ross B. and Gertrude E. (Johnson) Phelps.
A graduate of Henderson Central High School, N.Y., she earned a degree in dietetics at the State University of NY Technical College in Canton, N.Y. She was a dietitian in the Northern New York hospitals and public schools prior to being the director of food services at her college alma mater, where she retired in 1971.
She and her husband, David, lived in Canton and Morristown, N.Y., before moving to Winter Haven, Fla., where they enjoyed 15 years together. Following his death and the death of her only daughter, Kay moved to Northcrest in 2000 to be near to her step-daughter, Beverly A. Reddick.
Kay was an active life-long United Methodist and a member of Ames Collegiate United Methodist/Wesley Foundation and the United Methodist Women. Kay found pleasure in being a friend and "a good neighbor." At Northcrest, she especially enjoyed serving on the Library Committee and reading with the children.
She is survived by one step-daughter, Beverly A. Reddick, of Ames; brother Ross B. Reddick II (Catherine), of Barrington, R.I.; one sister, Natalie P. (Charles) Tennant, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; brother Reginald F. (Margaret) Reddick, of Brewerton, N.Y.; brother Gerald J. (Marie) Reddick, of Loudon, Texas; grandson, John F. (Kathryn) Connell, and their sons Stephen and Sean, all of Fort Hood, Texas; a step-grandson William C. (Robin) Reddick and children Ryan and Sarah of Long Beach, Calif.; 14 nieces and nephews; and a daughter by choice, Mary Sawyer, of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David; one daughter, Cynthia Reddick Connell; one brother, George, who was killed at Pearl Harbor while serving on the USS Arizona; and one step-son, Maj. William G. Reddick.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the United Methodist Women, 2622 W. Lincoln Way, Ames, IA, 50014, or to Northcrest Community.
