Helena Marie Martins, age 88, of Ames, died Saturday, Dec. 29, at Bethany Manor in Story City. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. A reception will be immediately after the service.

Helena Marie Martins was born on Jan. 24, 1919, in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of William and Emma Joubert Chace. She grew up in Fall River and owned and operated a restaurant in Newport, R.I. She moved to Ames in 1984, where she was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Impressing everyone she met with her spunk and determination, she exemplified Shakespeare's lines, "Though she be but little/She is fierce."

She is survived by one daughter, Sheryl Andre of Ames; one granddaughter, Tami Hicks, of Ames; one grandson, David Andre of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and two sisters, Beatrice Meeks, of Texas, and Lillian Hamilton, of Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Victor Martins; four sisters, Alice Carr, Doris Chace, Evelyn Chace and Teresa Hanscom; and three brothers, George Chace, Ray Chace and Albert Chace.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial donations may be sent to Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation for Israel Family Hospice House or Bethany Manor.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family with arrangements.
