Lynn Habben, 76, of Webster City, died Saturday, Dec. 22, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge after a short illness. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, with the Rev. Mike Kroona officiating. Private family burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center in Webster City.
Carroll Lynn Habben was born Aug. 8, 1931, in Waterloo, the son of Edward and Grace Maude Campbell Habben. He graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1949. He attended Iowa State College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1953 in agriculture education. In 1972, he earned a master's degree from Iowa State University in adult education.
While at ISU, he was in ROTC and "Advance Rotsee," which led to his service in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in field artillery, ultimately being assigned to Korea in September 1953 (after the armistice was signed). He returned to Fort Collins, Colo., in August 1955, with discharge in October 1955.
He married Lorraine G. Riensche June 16, 1957, in Jubilee. They moved to Webster City where he was employed for 34 years with the Iowa State University Extension Service (Hamilton County Extension Service). He began his career as the 4-H and youth leader in 1956, and after four years became the extension director, he retired in 1990. He worked for North Central Turf as a turf specialist and consultant from 1991 to 2008.
He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, where he served as vice-president and president on the church council, taught Sunday School and served on various boards and committees. He also was active in the Webster City Kiwanis Club, where he served as a past president, was on the Kiwanis board and recruited more than 25 new members. He was an active part of Iowa State University Extension Association and Iowa Association of County Extension Directors, serving on the board of directors for both. He was Hamilton County ISU Alumni Club president as well as Cyclone Club president. He served as treasurer on the board of the Boone Valley Housing since 1992. He also was involved in numerous other community boards, committees and clubs.
A few of his most prominent awards included National Distinguished Service Award for the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, ISU R.K. Bliss Extension Citation, election to the Iowa State 4-H Hall of Fame, Friend of the Hamilton County Fair and a Kiwanis George F. Hixson Fellow.
In addition to his wife, Lorraine, he is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Angela Habben, of Denver, Colo., Jeff Habben and Veronique Keppenne, of Urbandale, Craig and Shelly Habben, of Billings, Mont.; seven grandchildren, Lyndsay, Brittany, Amandine, Nigel, Chase, Emma and Clay Habben; one brother and sister-in-law, Duane and Betty Habben, of Dike; and one sister and brother-in-law, Cecile and Robert Powers, of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, American Diabetes Association or the Hamilton County 4-H Foundation
