Richard "Dick" Ostrem, age 80, of 4365 E. Leach Avenue in Des Moines, and formerly of Story City, died Aug. 1, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Burial was in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Formal folding and presentation of the American Flag was conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.

Dick was born on Aug. 3, 1926, in Story City, the son of Matt and Julia (Severeid) Ostrem. He married RoseAnn Franklin in Story City on Aug. 6, 1949. Richard served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was food store manager for the Eastgate Super Valu Store in Des Moines and then Don's Super Valu in south Des Moines. After 35 years with Super Valu, he retired in 1988. In earlier years, he was a mechanic in Story City and worked at Borden's Dairy in Boone.

Richard was a member of the American Legion in Boone and Story City. He enjoyed watching sports on television. In earlier years, he liked to golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Bob. Richard is survived by his wife, RoseAnn of Des Moines, two sons, Scott Ostrem of Des Moines, and Brian Ostrem and wife, Terrie, of Carlisle; two daughters, Kathy Brumer and husband, John of Clive and Janet Hemphill and husband, Jon of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; a brother, Curt Ostrem and wife Jeanne of Ames; seven grandchildren, Susan and husband Nate, Lori and husband Brad, Erin and husband Tony, and Tony, Emily, Eric, and Nicole; and four great-grandchildren, Samantha, Christopher, Hayden, and Nicholas.
