Howard Keys Safly, 92, of Ames, died Sunday, Oct. 21, at Israel Family Hospice in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the United Methodist Church in Napier, officiated by Pastor Margaret Aiseayew. A fellowship luncheon at the church will be followed by burial in Story Memorial Gardens in Ames.

Howard Keys Safly was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Kenney, Ill., to James Ferrel and Lettitia Mithilda (Johnson) Safly. He married Frances Rinnah McKim July 28, 1935, in Nevada. In addition to farming all of his life, he owned Safly Corn Shelling and Trucking. He was a longtime member of his church, enjoyed bowling league in Boone and served on the school board. He loved camping, his grandchildren, genealogy and spending winters on South Padre Island.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Frances, of Ames; three sons, Jim (Joyce), Jack (Julie), both of Ames, and Steve, of Ridgeway, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Joel, of Fort Myers, Fla., Janet (Brian) Kilmer, of Gilbert, Jason (Ann), of Lenexa, Kan., Scott, of Fraser, Todd (fianc�e Teresa), of Gilbert, Mathew (Myra), of Ankeny, Mark (Melanie), of North Liberty, and Doug Blomgren, of Boone; 19 great-grandchildren; and Connie Safly, of Ames.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Ferrel and Milton; one sister, Inez Spencer; and one granddaughter, Julienne Blomgren.

A time of visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be given to his church.

Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of arrangements.
