Gerald Coughenour, of Ames, died today. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home.

Gerald "Slug" D. Coughenour, 71, of Ames, died Tuesday, Oct. 23. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Ames.

Jerry was born April 24, 1936, in Collins, to Ray Coughenour and Cory Alice Oyler. He married Ruth Marie Britten June 4, 1982, in Ames.

He graduated in 1956 from Collins High School. He then pursued a career that spanned 30 plus years with the federal government, maintaining the federal grain storage sites and the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames. He was a lifelong member of the Moose Lodge and Grand Avenue Baptist Church. He enjoyed dancing, football and baseball. His greatest enjoyment was his children, grandchildren and friends.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Karen Coughenour, of Athol, Idaho; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Leola Britten, of Zearing, and Alan Britten and Karen Combs, of McCallsburg; stepdaughter, Sharon Britten, of Fulton, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Britten, of Seattle, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; and stepson, Kent.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at Adams Funeral Home.

Memorial donations can be made to Israel Family Hospice House.
