THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

Miriam R. Lipton died Sunday, Sept. 23, at Green Hills Health Care Center. She was blessed with a long, full life. As would be her wish, her age will not be printed. A graveside service and burial will be Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in New York City. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Ames Jewish Congregation.

Miriam R. Lipton was born in New York City to Isidore and Nena (Markow) Resnick. She attended Hunter College High School in New York City, graduating in 1926. In 1930, she graduated from Hunter College, where she majored in mathematics and physics, an unusual endeavor for a woman at that time. She taught in the New York City school system in a number of capacities for more than 30 years. She began her career teaching English to recent immigrants in night school and then taught second grade at PS 18 in the Bronx, N.Y., for many years. Before her retirement in 1973, she became a teacher trainer. She loved her work and was highly respected by all. She also was known for her impeccable taste and stunning wardrobe. Her coworkers and students would stand at the door waiting to see her outfit of the day, complete with matching scarf and coordinating jewelry.

On April 10, 1938, she married Sidney S. Lipton and they had one child, a daughter, Wendy. Miriam and her husband traveled widely, often with family or friends. After her husband's death in 1968, she continued teaching until her retirement. She lived independently in New York and Florida until 2002, when she moved to Ames to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law.

She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, attending Elder Hostels and traveling with friends. She most enjoyed visiting her daughter, son-in-law and grandson in whom she took such pride and joy. She also was devoted to her nieces and their families as well as to her many friends. Everyone who knew her felt her warmth and caring nature. Most recently, she had the pleasure of meeting her great-granddaughter, when her grandson's family visited Ames from San Francisco.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Martin Edelson; one grandson, Steven Edelson and his wife, Amy; one great-granddaughter, Kyra Edelson; and two great-nephews and one great-niece, Alan (Shelley) Feinman, Larry (Dale) Edelson, and Ellen (Mike) Wild. We will all remember her with love.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Leon Resnick and Barney Resnick; and her beloved nieces, Lillian Edelson and Frances Feinman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Ames Jewish Congregation.

Adams Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
