THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, September 16, 2007.

Harold Malcolm Wright, 91, of Ames, died Sept. 14, 2007, at home in the Health Care Center at Northcrest Retirement Community.

Harold Malcolm Wright was born on Valentine's Day 1916, at home in Traer to Thomas E. and Jennie Winnifred Wright. He grew up on the farm, attending Stormy Point No. 5 Country School and graduating from Traer High School in 1933. He graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1938. Harold served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed in France.

Upon returning from military service in 1946, he settled in Cedar Rapids and became interested in soil conservation and contour farming. He began managing the family farm in 1953.

He later moved to Ames and began a career with the Iowa Department of Transportation as a real estate appraiser. On May 23, 1959, he married Patricia Hall of Tipton. They had two daughters.

Harold and Pat helped found Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames, where he served as a church officer. Harold was loyal to many causes and an avid reader of sustainable agriculture and politics. He was a long-time member of Practical Farmers of Iowa and the Golden K Kiwanis.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Esther W. Sparks, of Heber Springs, Ark. Harold is survived by his wife, Pat; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Ben Kern, of Norwalk, and Linda and David Simmons, of Winter Park, Fla. He was special to his five grandchildren, Adam, Michael, and Jennie Kern, and Mary Ella and Eric Simmons. He is also survived by his brother, Clarence Wright, of Great Falls, Mont.; nieces, nephew and friends.

He was lovingly cared for by the staff of the Health Care Center at Northcrest, and expertly treated by Dr. Killion, Dr. Kitchell, Dr. Vos and Dr. Staniforth and their staffs.

Funeral services will be at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1416 20th St., Ames, at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, with the Rev. Dr. Stacey Jones officiating. Visitation with family will be at Adams Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. A graveside service will be held at Buckingham Cemetery near Traer at 2 p.m. Monday.

Memorial gifts may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church or the Health Care Center at Northcrest.
