Alice M. Mortvedt was born September 5, 1901, to parents Ivar J. and Anna Olava (Bergeland) Hia in Hamilton County, Iowa. Alice graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1921. Alice and Ben Mortvedt were married February 14, 1924. They farmed north of Story City, Iowa until 1955 and then moved to Story City. She was a member of the St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City, the St. Petri Quilters, and the ELCW. Alice was the last of that generation of Mortvedt and Hia families.

Alice passed away October 30, 2000, at Bethany Manor in Story City at 99 years of age.

Alice is survived by two sons, David Mortvedt and wife Kathy of Ellsworth, Iowa, and Loren Mortvedt and wife Sharon of Olin, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Dennis Mortvedt, Mitchell Mortvedt, Roxanne Bell, Debra Arneson, Loree Hanson, Janelle Luther, and Jeryl Thibaudeau; two step-grandchildren, Jana Vanek and Alan Johnson; fourteen great-grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ben on February 23, 1992, and infant daughter, Rosalie; a great-grandson, Robbie Hanson; four brothers, John Hia, Obert Hia, Selmer Hia, and Arnold Hia; and three sisters, Anna Anderson, Lula Wierson, and Olava Buckels.
