Ben Mortvedt, 97, Story City, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 1992, at Grand Ave. Care Centre in Ames. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 26, 10:30 a.m. at St. Petri Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Mamreland Cemetery north of Story City. Pastor Rolfe Johnstad officiated. Organist was Grace Johnson. Delbert Quam was the vocalist. Rev. Johnstad sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Casket Bearers were Dennis Mortvedt, Mitchell Mortvedt, Keith Arneson, Tom Bell, Mark Hanson and Kirk Luther. Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home in Story City was in charge of arrangements.
Ben was born December 28, 1894, in Hamilton County to Oscar and Serina (Swenson) Mortvedt. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at North St. Petri Lutheran Church. During World War I, Ben served his country in the Army. Following the war, he married Alice Hia on February 14, 1924. They farmed north of Story City until 1955 when they moved to Story City. While in Story City, Ben worked in the construction business for Story City Builders and Matson Construction until he retired in the early 1960’s.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Mortvedt of Story City; two sons, David Mortvedt of Ellsworth and Loren Mortvedt of Olin; seven grandchildren, Dennis Mortvedt, Mitchell Mortvedt, Roxanne Bell, Debra Arneson, Loree Hanson, Janell Luther, and Jeryl Mortvedt; two step-grandchildren, Jana Vanek and Alan Johnson; and ten great grandchildren.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Rosalie, a great-grandson, Robbie Hanson, 8 brothers, Osmond, Alfred, Bert, Elmer, Myron, Arthur, Severt and Palmer and one sister Selme Stokka.
