Frederick Stuve, 84, of Ames, died Wednesday, July 25, at home. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at the Adams Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, at the Adams Funeral Home.

Frederick W. "Fred" Stuve, 84, of Ames, died peacefully Wednesday, July 25, at his home under the loving care of his youngest daughter, Alice. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Adams Funeral Home. Celebration of Life funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, at the funeral home, with Pastor David Burling officiating. Interment will follow at Iowa State University Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 37

Frederick W. "Fred" Stuve was born Oct. 7, 1922, to Oscar William and Ella (Jahn) Stuve of San Antonio, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1947 from Texas A&M and his Master of Science degree in 1952 from the University of Texas at Austin in aerospace engineering. He began his teaching career in the Engineering Mechanics Department while also doing research for the Defense Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin. From 1953 to 1956, he was an instructor at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. In 1956 he came to Ames where he was a professor of aerospace engineering until his retirement in 1988.

He married Mary Margot Suther Swain Aug. 29, 1951.

During WWII, he served three years with the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lunga Point. He was a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer.

He was an avid reader and military history buff. He had numerous and varied interests including photography, woodworking and small and large bore rifle and pistol shooting. He was a proficient machinist, draftsman and auto mechanic.

He is survived by two sons, Bill Stuve and John Stuve, both of Ames; six daughters, Dorothy Fennen, of Omaha, Neb., Elizabeth McKern, Carol Stuve and Alice Stuve, all of Ames, Kathryn Zhorne, of Waterloo, and Margaret Witmer, of Maxwell; 11 grandchildren; one brother, LeRoy Stuve of Washington, Texas; and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 38 years, Mary.
