THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, July 14, 2007.

Helen Eleanor Herges Dahlmeier, 96, passed on peacefully Monday, July 9, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames. Interment will follow at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Helen Eleanor Herges Dahlmeier was born May 26, 1911, in Sisseton, S.D., to Lorenz Herges and Rose Schreiner Herges. She spent her early years in Sisseton and later attended the College of St Catherine in St. Paul, Minn., and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where she earned a teaching certificate.

She then returned to Sisseton and began to enjoy, for her, the joys of teaching young children and there met Willis John Dahlmeier. They were married July 14, 1934. When her husband's military unit was called into service, she lived with her parents in Sisseton.

After the war, they moved to Jefferson, where they lived for 26 years. In 1959, they moved to Ames, where she resided until 2002 when she moved to Bryan, Texas, and then to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Helen was a benevolent and thoughtful person, a nurturer and example for her children. She was a wonderful homemaker, enjoyed cooking, entertaining her friends, a good game of bridge, avid gardening and was a passionate golfer.

During their retirement years, Helen and Willis enjoyed traveling to visit their children and grandchildren and spent the winters in Florida.

Helen was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church for 43 years serving on the Altar Society, attending Bible Study groups, and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed serving as a Pink Lady at Mary Greeley Hospital for many years, and she was a member of KC Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Survivors include her children, John (Gloria Werner), of Mound, Minn., Suzanne (Edward Rhomberg), of Bryan, Texas, and Frederick (Jane), of Singer Island, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother and her husband of 63 years.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at the Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., in Ames. A scripture service will be at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Love Thy Neighbor Fund at St. Thomas Aquinas Church or Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL, 33407.

Arrangements are being handled by Howard-Price Funeral Home of North Palm Beach, Fla., and Stevens Memorial Chapel of Ames.
