From the Southern Illinoisan, June 20, 2007:

CARTERVILLE, IL - Ruth Kathleen Sowers, 89, died Monday, June 18, 2007, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2007, in First United Methodist Church in Carterville, with Pastor Stephen Palmer officiating. Burial for her ashes will be at a later date in Nevada, Iowa. Friends may call from 1 until 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church in Carterville.

Ruth was born Nov. 22, 1917, in Fernald, Iowa to Vern and Bessie (Klump) Proctor.

She married Marcellus Sowers on Oct. 29, 1939, in Nevada, Iowa. He preceded her in death June 25, 1990.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Mawdsley of Carterville; two grandchildren, Jennifer Mawdsley and husband, Rush Luangsuwan, of Woodridge and Jeffrey Mawdsley and wife, Alison, of Crystal Lake; great-granddaughter, Jessica Luangsuwan; sister-in-law, Jean Proctor of Eugene, Ore.; and brother-in-law, Ralph Hitchings of Zearing, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Robert Proctor; three sisters, Doris Hilburn, Elizabeth Hitchings and Irene Handsaker.

Ruth was a homemaker.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carterville, where she was active in the United Methodist Womens. She was a member of the Rip Roarin-Reds (Red Hat Society) of Carterville. She also was a member of Home Community Education (HCE) Organization of Williamson County.

Ruth enjoyed reading, crafts, cooking and was an excellent seamstress.

Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville is in charge of arrangements.
