Richard Wayne Coy, Major, U.S. Air Force, retired, formerly of Ames, died peacefully at his home at Lake Okoboji on June 14.

Richard was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Ames to Phillip Theodore Coy and Georgia Hunt Coy. After graduating from the Oak Park Academy in Nevada, He joined the Air Force. He flew 33 missions during World War II as First Pilot, 394th Bomb Group, 587th Squadron in a Martin B-26 Marauder.

He married Gretchen Eulah Anton on July 17, 1943 at Fort Stockton, Texas on a three-day pass. After the war, he returned to Ames to go into the homebuilding business with his father, and oldest brother, Phillip Jackson Coy. He is past president of the Ames Homebuilders Association. He also served in the Air Force Reserves. After 40 years in the home building business, he retired to Lake Okoboji.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of almost 64 years, Gretchen Anton Coy, a native of Ames; three children, Gary Wayne Coy, Ronald Wayne Coy and Gregory Alan Coy; four grandchildren, Catherine Marie Coy, Christopher Michael Coy, Jonathan Alan Coy, wife, Dawn, and Julie Ann Clarke, husband, Adam, and five great grandchildren, Noah Alexander Coy, Tobias Alan Coy, Eden Mary Coy, Chloe Ella Clarke and Emmett Dewayne Clarke.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Capt. David Alan Coy, U.S. Air Force, retired.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 18 at Adams Funeral Home, 232-5121. Burial will be in Story Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Adams Funeral Home.
