THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, May 31, 2007.

Carl E. Ekberg Jr. died Wednesday, May 30, in Ames. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Iowa State University Cemetery.

Carl E. Ekberg Jr. was born in 1920 in Minneapolis to Carl and Ruth (Olin) Ekberg. He was a graduate of Marshall High School and received the degrees of bachelor of civil engineering, master of science and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He married Dorothy Heley May 25, 1944, in Fergus Falls, Minn.

In July 1943, he became a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and subsequently served on a seaplane tender in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Following discharge from the Navy in 1946, he returned to the University of Minnesota to pursue graduate studies in structural engineering. Later that year, an offer of an instructorship marked the beginning of a career in academia. In 1951, he became an assistant professor of civil engineering at North Dakota State University. In 1953, he moved to Lehigh University, where he held a split appointment in teaching and research. In 1959, he accepted an appointment as professor and head of civil engineering at Iowa State University. He relinquished his position as department head in 1985 and served in a teaching and research capacity until he retired in 1988.

His activities in research focused on the improvement of design criteria for structural concrete. At Lehigh, he conducted extensive tests to determine the feasibility of prestressed concrete for highway and railway bridges with particular emphasis on resistance to repeated loading. At Iowa State, he participated in the development of design criteria for concrete floors reinforced with cold-formed steel decking.

He was a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, an honorary member of the American Concrete Institute and held life memberships in the American Railway Engineering Association, the American Society of Engineering Education, the Iowa Engineering Society, the Osborn Research Club and the University of Minnesota M-Club. He was a registered Professional Engineer and an honorary life member of the Iowa Engineering Society. He was a member of Chi Epsilon, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi honor societies.

He was a member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church and the Ames Rotary Club. He served as a director of the University Bank and Trust Company from 1962 to 1985.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Ames; two daughters, Gretchen (Jurgen) Heley Brommelhoff, of Acton, Mass., and Janet Heley Ekberg, of San Rafael, Calif.; two sons, Carl (Patricia) Ekberg III, of Rutherford, Tenn., and Thomas William Ekberg, of Black Diamond, Wash.; two brothers, William Ekberg, of Bismarck, N.D., and David Ekberg, of Squaw Lake, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert.
