Marvin Groat, 87, of Ames, died Wednesday, May 30, at Israel Family Hospice House. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home.

Marvin Groat, 87, of Ames, died Wednesday, May 30, at Israel Family Hospice House. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 4, at Adams Funeral Home, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin.

Marvin Groat was born Sept. 14, 1919, in Irwin, to Jesse and Inga (Martenson) Groat. He graduated from Irwin High School in 1937. He served as a seaman 1st class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a clerk at the Iowa Department of Transportation, retiring in 1983. He also worked for Hy-Vee for 15 years and Randalls on the weekends.

He married Irma Mae Knudson March 31, 1940. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by one son, Gary (Jennifer) L. Groat, of Ames; one daughter, Connie (Gene) Bartmess, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; four grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997, and one sister, Mildred L. Munson.

Memorials may be given to Israel Family Hospice House.
