Dorothy Catherine Frick Myrick was born on May 17, 1919 in Graettinger, IA, the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Graettinger) Frick. She was 6lbs and "short" and could fit in a shoebox. She was christened at the Graettinger Catholic Church. Dorothy attended rural school in Graettinger before moving to Arnolds Park and then Spirit Lake in 1927. She won awards in school for Palmer method of handwriting. She was the only child in class, so she took extra classes during lunch to put her in the First Grade with others. Dorothy graduated in 1936 from Spirit Lake High School. She continued her education for a year at Spencer Adult Education. She waitressed at Jersey Dell Diner and Dutch Lunch in Spirit Lake and worked at C-D Farm Service in Spencer before moving to Estherville. She then worked in the office of Emmet County Production Marketing Assn.
On March 15, 1953, she was united in marriage to Darwin Myrick in Spirit Lake. The couple lived on a farm south of Superior. She devoted her lifetime as a wife, mother and grandmother (and mowing grass). She enjoyed drawing, crafts, listening to the radio (especially local high school ballgames) and photography. Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake, Terril Legion Auxiliary, South Dickinson County Fund (23 years), Terril Music Club (Community Calendar Project- 29 years) and was active in 4-H as a youth and as a adult leader of the Richland Rustlers and a Dickinson County Honorary Member. Dorothy was involved with the UMC Circle, she taught 2nd grade Sunday School, served on the Church Board as Education Chairman, Dickinson Co. Women's Farm Bureau, Richland Township Safety Chairman and Superior Centennial Steering Committee.
In July, 2002, Dorothy moved to an apartment in Spirit Lake before moving to the Milford Nursing Home in 2006. She passed away on May 10, 2007 at eighty-seven years of age.
She is survived by her son, Douglas (Kathy) Myrick of Iowa City; daughters, Janice (Jim) Gammon of Nevada, IA and Barbara (Bill) Pedersen of Boone, IA; sister, Ann Jensen of Englewood, FL; grandchildren, Molly Gammon, Zachary Gammon, Molly Myrick; great-grandson, Lucas Brozek; sister-in-laws, Doris Frick, Pearl Weber, Nadine Burgeson; brother-in-law, Vernon Hassman.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin in 1982; niece, Linda Herbrandson; brothers, Russell, Walter and Emmet Frick; her parents.
Funeral services were held May 14 at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake with Pastor Kay Hooper officiating. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery.
