Esther Marie Jungmann Halverson, 86, of rural Nevada, died Saturday, April 21, at Mayo Clinic-St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., in Nevada, with Pastor Myron D. Herzberg officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Esther Marie Jungmann Halverson was born March 6, 1921, in Van Meter, to Matz and Dorothea Jungmann. She was a 1939 graduate of Van Meter High School. In 1942, she graduated from the Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines. She served during World War II as a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps of the U.S. Army. She married Murl Halverson May 9, 1944, in Sante Fe, N.M. She was employed as a nurse at both Story County Hospital in Nevada and at Nevada Community Schools, where she retired after 25 years of dedicated service. She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, the Esther Circle, the V.F.W. Post No. 788 in Cedar Rapids and the William F. Ball American Legion Post No. 48 in Nevada. She enjoyed being with family and traveling.

She is survived by her husband of more than 62 years, Murl LeVern Halverson, of Nevada; two sons, Stephen Halverson, of Nevada, and Craig Halverson, of Dallas; two daughters, Barbara Westercamp, of Cedar Rapids, and Mary Wettach, of Mount Pleasant; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Lloyd Jungmann, of Adel, and Paul Jungmann, of Kansas City; and two sisters, Priscilla "Pat" Gussford, of Des Moines, and Sharon "Becky" Stover, of Norwalk.

She was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers, Ferd, Harold, Leo, Marvin, Elmer, Raymond, Ernie and Robert Jungmann; and two sisters, Lucille Hougham and Alberta "Ruth" Myers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada.

The Esther M. Halverson Memorial Fund has been established at First National Bank, 405 Fifth St., Ames, IA, 50010.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
