Mark Alan Wessman, 34, died Wednesday, March 28, at his home of an apparent heart ailment. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church with burial following in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Mark Alan Wessman was born Aug. 4, 1972, in Ames, to Steve and Kay Wessman. He grew up in Ames, graduating from Ames High in 1991 where he really enjoyed working with the athletic teams as a trainer. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1996. He was president and a very active member of Theta Xi fraternity on campus.
He had been employed for the last 16 months with USDA on Dayton Avenue. He considered it special to be a third generation Wessman to be federally employed on Dayton Avenue. Previous to this he was employed at C&K Heating and Cooling.
Mark had special gifts for woodworking and home repairs. He was a very creative problem solver and was often the first one called when friends and family had a home emergency. Everyone who knew him well will miss his terrific sense of humor.
He is survived by his parents; one sister, Stephanie (Mike) Lemmon, of Clive; and his three beloved nieces/godchildren, Andrea, Julia, and Allison, who have always thought the world of their "Unka Mawk." Also surviving him are his maternal grandparents, Fred and Agatha Varnum, Dorothy "Gramma Dee" Shepard, Geraldine Wessman, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Local Ames aunts include Aggie (Terry) Krausman and their family as well as Ann Wessman.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents.
A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Stevens Memorial Chapel.Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or American Heart Association.
Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
