Cordelia Anfenson, 105, of Ames, died Tuesday, March 27, of heart failure at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at Oakwood Road Church in Ames.
Cordelia Anfenson was born Jan. 30, 1902, in Runnells, to Scott and Bertha (Deaton) Freel. She completed the eighth grade in school and was then needed to assist with chores on the family farm. She married Howard Anfenson Dec. 24, 1919, in Des Moines. She was a homemaker until her family was raised. She began as an in-home caregiver in 1938 and in 1943, she started to cook for several Iowa State University fraternities and also at Riverside Manor. She resumed as a caregiver with Homeward until 1991, when she moved to New Jersey to live with her son, Harold. She returned to Ames in 1996 and resided at Abington on Grand until she died.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Anfenson, of Clyde, Texas, and Harold Anfenson, of Palmyra, N.J.; three daughters, Beatrice Markley, of Ames, Marie Fisher, of Stanton, Calif., and Donna Kay (Roger) Simpson, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; special friend, Herman Kennedy; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987; infant son, Wesley Faye; infant daughter, Selma Edith; one sister, Edith Bradshaw; and three brothers, Walter, Wesley and Darrell Freel.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family and/or Israel Family Hospice House or Oakwood Road Church.
Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
