Merrill Dean Rhodes, 86, of Zearing, IA, died Monday, March 5, 2007 at Story County Hospital, Nevada, Iowa of heart failure.

Merrill was a farmer his entire life. He farmed for over 50 years in the St. Anthony and Zearing areas.

He was born January 7, 1921, in New Providence, Iowa to Floyd and Nellie (Mills) Rhodes. He graduated from Clemons High School in 1940. He married Doris (Bowlin) Rhodes on April 26, 1941 in Chillicothe, Mo. Merrill was a member of the Zearing Christian Church and served on the Minerva Valley Telephone Company Board.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; three children, son Byron (Sandy) Rhodes of Zearing, daughter Marla Rhodes of Zearing and daughter DeAnna (Bob) Overman of Adel; five grandchildren, Brett Rhodes, Blake Rhodes, Shauna Callaway, Lynette Wineland, Chad Overman and fifteen great-grandchildren. Merrill is also survived by two sisters, Mildred Rowden of Wautoma, WI and Thelma Ross of Yerington, NV and one brother, Norman (Patty) Rhodes of Marshalltown, IA.

Merrill was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Avonelle Rogers, Reva Rhodes, Pauline Kemmerer and one brother Lowell Rhodes.

Other than Merrill's family, his greatest love was farming. He also enjoyed nature, hunting and was an avid sports fan. He participated in basketball and baseball and loved watching his children and grandchildren in their sports activities.

Merrill will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9th at Zearing Christian Church at 212 W. Main in Zearing, IA. Burial will be at Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg, IA. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Thursday, March 8th at Zearing Chrsitian Church with family present from 5-7 pm. Fredregill Funeral Home, Zearing, is handling arrangements.
