Merrill Rhodes, 86, of Zearing, died Monday, March 5, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada. Services are pending at Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing.

Merrill Dean Rhodes, 86, of Zearing, died Monday, March 5, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada of heart failure. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Zearing Christian Church, 212 W. Main, in Zearing. Burial will be in Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg.

Merrill Dean Rhodes was born Jan. 7, 1921, in New Providence, to Floyd and Nellie (Mills) Rhodes. He graduated from Clemons High School in 1940. He married Doris (Bowlin) Rhodes April 26, 1941, in Chillicothe, Mo. He was a farmer his entire life. He farmed for more than 50 years in the St. Anthony and Zearing area. He was a member of Zearing Christian Church and served on the Minerva Valley Telephone Company Board.

Other than his family, his greatest love was farming. He also enjoyed nature, hunting and was an avid sports fan. He participated in basketball and baseball and loved watching his children and grandchildren in their sports activities. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; three children, Byron (Sandy) Rhodes, of Zearing, Marla Rhodes, of Zearing, and DeAnna (Bob) Overman, of Adel; five grandchildren, Brett Rhodes, Blake Rhodes, Shauna Callaway, Lynette Wineland and Chad Overman; and 15 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Mildred Rowden of Wautoma, Wis., and Thelma Ross, of Yearington, Nev.; and one brother, Norman (Patty) Rhodes, of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Avonelle Rogers, Reva Rhodes and Pauline Kemmerer; and one brother, Lowell Rhodes.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at Zearing Christian Church.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
