Jan. 27, 1921-March 4, 2007
Mildred Aleene Shelton, 86, died Sunday, March 4, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 9, at First Christian Church.
Mildred Aleene Shelton was born Jan. 27, 1921, in Mt. Zion, Ky., to Harlow and Alma Smith. She married W. Neil Shelton April 11, 1947. They lived in Chicago and Memphis, Tenn., as Neil became degreed as a clinical psychologist and psychiatrist. His medical practice also took them to Independence and Ames in Iowa, and to Salem, Va. During this time, Mildred was busy raising their three children, Marcia, Jeff and Grady. Ames had been their home since 1967.
She was proud to be a homemaker, a wonderful cook and seamstress. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She cherished her friendships, especially the Birthday Club, her church family and neighbors, young and old. She was a leader at First Christian Church who became known for providing comfort to many with her lovingly made quilts. She was a gentle Southern lady with amazing strength and courage.
Left to mourn her loss are her daughter, Marcia Claire (Curtis) Ward, of Marshalltown; her son, Jeffery Conrad, of Redmond, Wash.; and daughter-in-law, Starla Shelton Clark, of Vashon Island, Wash.; grandchildren, Emily (Austen) George, of Chandler, Ariz., Erica (Patrick) Prewitt, of Schweinfurt, Germany, Conrad Shelton, of Seattle, Wash., and Sydney and Ben Shelton, of Vashon Island, Wash.; and great-grandchild, Jacob Mull, of Schweinfurt, Germany. Mildred was looking forward to the arrival of two more great-grandchildren this year.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and in 1998 by her husband, Neil, and her son, Grady.
Memorials may be given to First Christian Church.
Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
