Everett S. Joy
Dec. 23, 1921-Jan. 20, 2007Everett S. Joy, 85, of Maysville, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 20, at a hospital in Cameron, Mo. Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 22, at Maysville United Methodist Church. The body was cremated after the service.
Everett S. Joy was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Ames, to Leon Everett and Murrel Symes Joy. He was a 1939 graduate of Ames High School. He married Doris Jean Leith Jan. 31, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo. They lived in Ames until 1961, when he and his family moved to Gilbert. On Jan. 1, 1970, he and his wife, Doris, moved to Weatherby, Mo., and then to Cameron, Mo., in 1986, and on to Schoolcraft, Mich., in 1990. After 10 years in Schoolcraft, he moved back to Maysville, Mo., where he lived until his death.
A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 10, 1942, and served with the 727th Signal Aircraft Warning Company. He was discharged in January 1946.
He was a self-employed homebuilder and was a skilled woodworker and cabinetmaker. He was an excellent storyteller and a hot air balloon pilot. He could be seen flying his balloon all over DeKalb County, Mo., Kalamazoo, Mich., and at Pershing Park in Kansas City. He had Belgian horses and raised hennys, ginneys and mules.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; one son, David Everett Joy and his wife, Marta, of Chandler, Ariz.; one daughter, the Rev. Sue Joy Gay and her husband, David, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one brother, M. Edward Joy, of Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren, Sherry Joy Hanrahan and her husband, Mike, of Portland, Ore., Bradley David Gay and fiancée, Nora Bergsten, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Daniel James Gay, of Detroit, Mich.; and special friends, Duane and Francie Swofford, of Maysville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Bonita Marie Joy.
Memorials may be made to the Fairport Lions Club.
Bram Funeral Home, 603 S. Sloan St., Maysville, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.
