Flora Margaret (Sydnes) Freeland, 94, of Ballard Creek Community in Huxley, died peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 9, after a short illness at Israel Family Hospice in Ames. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Marcia Kisner officiating. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery in Huxley followed by a Norwegian-style dinner across the street from the cemetery in the fellowship hall of Palestine Lutheran Church.

Flora Margaret (Sydnes) Freeland was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Turlock, Calif., to John R. and Anna Bertina "Tina" (Torresdal) Sydnes. She married Kermit Thomas Freeland Oct. 1, 1932, at her parents' home south of Huxley. Together they farmed the original Apland Homestead on Highway 210 east of Interstate 35. They were faithful members of Nazareth Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one son, Mark (Diane) Freeland, of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Esther (Richard E.) Johnsen, of Fort Collins, Colo., Diane (Merlyn J.) Jenkins, of Wyomissing, Pa., and Margaret (Ron) Nelson, of Cedar Rapids; four sisters, Dorothy Ehm, of Huxley, Thelma Monson, Virginia Lee and LaVonne (Maurice) Clark, of Ames; two sisters-in-law, Gwen Sydnes, of Madrid, and Esta Freeland Cox, of Northfield, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Kathy (Rich) O'Donnell, Becky (Chuck) Groh, Chris Johnsen, Kris and Stephen (Mary) Hostetter, Jeff and Greg Nelson; four great-grandchildren, Brandon and Tyler Groh, and Cale and Collin O'Donnell; and many beloved family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Arnold; and one sister, Beatrice.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater.
