Kenneth John Michel, 80, of rural Boone, died in peace Saturday, Jan. 6, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services were today at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 295 Spruce Lane, northeast Boone County, with the Rev. Bruce Lakamp officiating. Burial was in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, next to the church.

Kenneth John Michel was born April 21, 1926, on the family farm north of Boone, to John G. Michel and Ella (Stoll) Michel. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He attended Mackey school in his early years and proceeded to continue his education at Story City, graduating in 1945.

After graduating from high school, he chose to farm the family farm with his father and continued to farm to the age of 79. He married Marian Lee Macek March 29, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. From this union, they were blessed with three children.

He was a collector of John Deere antique tractors and was proud to show his collection of wildlife plates to many. Football was an important part of his life. Since his high school years of playing football, he became an avid Hawkeye fan, attending football games in Iowa City for more than 60 years. He also enjoyed basketball and wrestling and enjoyed reading various farm publications. He was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed being an active part of their lives.

He was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served as trustee, an Elder and was on the finance committee with his church.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marian, of Boone; one son, Rodney Michel and his wife, Jennifer, of Nevada; one daughter, Paula Voga and her husband, Paul, of Story City; his three grandchildren, Morgan, Logan and Colton Voga, of Story City; two step-grandchildren, Toni Millslagle and Jesse Baldus, of Nevada; one sister, Melva (Michel) Sherman, of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ann Jacobs, Velda Lutjen and Carol Varner; two brothers, Carl and Loren Michel; and an infant daughter, Joet Lynn.

Memorials will be directed to Lutheran Braille Workers for the Blind, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Israel Family Hospice.

Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story streets in Boone, was in charge of arrangements.
