Dan T. Maher, 81, formerly of Mingo, died Saturday, Dec. 30, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines of congestive heart failure. Funeral services were Jan. 3 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax.

Dan T. Maher was born March 25, 1925, in Des Moines. He graduated from Mingo High School and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. He married Patricia Longo of Des Moines Oct. 2, 1948. After college, he began farming near Mingo. During his 37 years of dairy farming, his operation became recognized as a Midwest model for innovative and progressive dairying. He routinely utilized dairy science technology, partnered with Iowa State University and piloted such innovations as minimum tillage, row crop management and state-of-the-art dairying practices. He was a member of Mid-America Dairy Association, Jasper County Dairy Herd Improvement Association, and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed visiting with and meeting new people; he was an avid traveler.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Maher; nine children, Shannon (Becky) Maher, of Mingo, Shelley (Dick) Chambers, of Des Moines, Kevin (Kelly) Maher, of Ames, Michael (Missy) Maher, of West Des Moines, Stephanie Maher, of Des Moines, Stacy (Bill) Mikesell, of Tualatin, Ore., Brendan (Gretchen) Maher, of Mankato, Minn., Melanie Maher, of West Des Moines, and Reagan Maher, of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Don (Althea) Maher; and three sisters, Katherine (Ted) Pellett, of Atlantic, Alicia (Jerry) Jennings, of Jefferson City, Tenn., and Virginia (Ken) Bohney, of Redondo Beach, Calif.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anne Patrice, and his parents, Daniel and Marie (Watts) Maher.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Colfax-Mingo Educational Foundation (middle school improvement) or Immaculate Conception Church in Colfax.

Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax was in charge of arrangements.
