TRI COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, December 28, 2006.

Arthur Wesley Drake, 88, of Slater, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 21. He died at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Arthur was born in Madrid, Iowa, on July 4, 1918, the son of Albert and Clarice (Putnam) Drake. He was a lifetime resident of east Boone, north Polk and south Story counties. He farmed for 50 years, retiring in 1989.

Arthur was proud to serve his country in the Army's 90th Infantry as a staff sergeant during World War II from April of 1942 to November of 1945.

Arthur married Mary "Bett" Sullivan on Oct. 12, 1941, in Bethany, Mo. Coming to trust Jesus Christ in 1955, Art was a charter member of Slater Baptist Church, serving 22 years as deacon and 18 years as financial secretary of the congregation.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Bett; two daughters, Kathy Quick of Sheldahl and Darla Goldberg of Slater; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Their only son, Arthur Alan, and one brother, Richard, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Slater Baptist Church in Slater with Pastor Don Michaelson officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Madrid with full military honors provided by the Slater American Legion.

Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are requested to his church.
