Alexander Thomas (Tom) Hague, 85, and Martha Mary Hague, 83, formerly of Ames, died recently in Mesa, Ariz. Tom passed away Aug. 17 of complications from diabetes. Martha passed away Aug. 27 of pancreatic cancer. A private family service and interment was held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Ariz.

Alexander Thomas Hague was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the Royal Canadian Navy. His ship, the HMCS Assiniboine, encountered and sank an enemy U-boat in the Battle of the Atlantic. Aboard the HMCS Blairmore, he provided support at the Battle of Normandy. He became a U.S. citizen in 1955.

Martha Mary Bennert Higgins Hague was born April 10, 1923, in Fargo, N.D. She was also a veteran of WWII and served with the U.S. Navy WAVES.

Thomas Hague married Martha Bennert Higgins in Port Huron, Mich., in 1948. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary aboard the SS Independence and reaffirmed their vows April 22, 1998, during a cruise to Hawaii.

The Hagues moved to Ames in 1958 when Tom built the water tower at the National Animal Disease Laboratory. When the lab facilities were completed, both Tom and Martha worked for the United States Department of Agriculture until their retirement. After retirement, they traveled extensively and spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz. They permanently moved to Mesa in 1994.

The Hagues were active in the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star while in Ames, holding many offices. Among them, Tom was Worshipful Master of the Ames Lodge and Martha, Worthy Matron, Laura Chapter. Both were ham radio enthusiasts and enjoyed genealogy research. Martha sang in the choruses in their community in Arizona and communicated extensively with friends and relatives on her computer. Tom could be counted on to lend a helping hand to his family, friends and community.

They are survived by four children, Judith Hadley and husband LeMoyne (Doc), of Corvallis, Ore.; Sue Mattson and husband Robert, of Cushing, Wis.; Robert Hague and wife Cathy, of Gilbert, Ariz.; and Janet Brink and husband, Larry, of Stockton, Calif. They are also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Martha is also survived by one sister, Elsie Spooner, of Port Huron, Mich., and one brother, Joseph Cummings, of Moorhead, Minn.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen Walker, of Kinkardine, Ontario, Canada. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Wilhelm Bennert, of Port Huron, Mich., and Edward Cummings, of Rosemount, Minn.
