Walter William Wilcke
Dec. 7, 1918-Oct. 25, 2006

Walter William Wilcke, 87, of Swaledale, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. According to his wishes, the body has been donated to the University of Iowa.

Walter William Wilcke was born Dec. 7, 1918, in Holstein, the son of Chris and Lydia (Will) Wilcke. He married Helen Martin May 23, 1935, in Ida Grove. He worked for Story Construction in Ames. He enjoyed doing arts and crafts, camping, fishing, his dog Nikki, horses and especially his family. Walt and Helen enjoyed "snow birding" for 15 years.

He is survived by one son, Roger Wilcke, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Dorothy Poland and her husband, Lonnie, of Alamosa, Colo., and Sherry Hopkins and her husband, Robert, of Swaledale; daughter-in-law Kay Wilcke, of Boone; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Phyllis Christie, Marie Schultz and her husband, Alvin, and LaVonne "Bonnie" Spotts, all of Battle Creek, and Isabelle Plagge, of Fremont, Neb.; and two brothers, Floyd Wilcke and Wendell Wilcke and his wife Jean, all of Battle Creek.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen on June 29, 2005; one son, Walter D. "Curly" Wilcke in 2001; one great-grandson, Wesley Poland; one sister, Francis Rowedder; two brothers, Ervin and Harlan Wilcke; two half-brothers; and two half-sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Walter W. Wilcke Memorial Fund.
