Carl Stanley 'Bud' Nelson
Sept. 18, 1920-Oct. 21, 2006

Carl Stanley "Bud" Nelson died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 21, at Israel Family Hospice House after collapsing while golfing Tuesday morning, Oct. 17. Memorial services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

Carl was born Sept. 18, 1920, in Sac City, to Chris C. and Matie (Jensen) Nelson. He graduated from high school in Audubon and received a degree in mining engineering from Iowa State College. He married Elaine Margaret "Haapy" Haapaniemi June 20, 1944, at Mt. Home, Idaho. During World War II, he was a B-24 pilot flying photo missions. After the war, he returned to Iowa State and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. Working as a process engineer, his career took him and his family to New York City, Brazil, Greece, Iran, Scotland, Los Angeles and Indonesia.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed lake and surf fishing, sports cars, golf and extended vacations in Canada and Mexico. Upon retirement, he and Elaine spent several years near Ely, Minn., before moving to Ames in 1983. For many years, they spent winters in South Padre Island, Texas. His life in Ames was greatly enriched by wonderful neighbors and great golfing buddies.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Ron (Dianna) Nelson, of Ames; three grandchildren, Aaron Nelson, of Ames, Adria Nelson, of San Francisco, and Karina (Curtis) Bryan, of Lander, Wyo.; and one niece, Judy (Don) Strang, of Montana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Nelson; and one son, Gary Nelson.
