THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Monday, October 16, 2006.

Esther Mortenson, 91, formerly of Jewell, passed from this life to life eternal on Thursday, Oct. 12, at Bethany Manor in Story City where she has resided for the past five years.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at United Church of Christ in Jewell with the Rev. Sandy Anenson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Esther Mabel Mechaelsen was born Nov. 1, 1914, in Kamrar to Grace (Olthoff) and Benjamin Mechaelsen. She grew up in the Kamrar area and attended the Kamrar schools, graduating from Kamrar High School in 1932. She worked for Gilbert Grocery prior to her marriage. She married Richard Clifford Mortenson March 20, 1937, in Kamrar. They farmed northeast of Jewell where she lived for 64 years. She was a member of United Church of Christ in Jewell.

She is survived by four children, Dick (Kathy) Mortenson, of Jewell, Cliff Mortenson, of Cedar Falls, Linda (Paul) Hove, of Kewanee, Ill., and Clair (Sue) Mortenson, of Boone; 11 grandsons; one granddaughter; three great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard, in 1991; one granddaughter, Robyn Christie Mortenson, in 1984; one daughter, Sue Cafferty, in 2004; one daughter-in-law, Jane Mortenson; three sisters, Bertha Welp, Ella Jans and Louise Mechaelsen; and three brothers, Seafke, Joe and Oliver.

Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is in charge of arrangements.
