John E. Nutty (1925-2006)

THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Monday, October 16, 2006.

John E. Nutty, 80, died at home Oct. 12 of natural causes. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at Adams Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at First United Methodist Church in Ames.

John was born Oct. 23, 1925, in the Mason City Hospital to Lee and Anne (Donnielson) Nutty. After living in Britt, the family moved to Ames in 1929 when Lee became an administrator for Iowa State College's (now Iowa State University) Extension Service.

John graduated from Ames High School in 1943. He served his country during World War II on active duty with the U.S. Navy from October 1943 to November 1945. He was again called for active duty from June 1951 to August 1953, during the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Navy Ready Reserve from 1943-65. He retired as a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander.

He graduated from Iowa State College (University) in 1949 with a degree in general engineering. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He received a Juris doctorate from the University of Iowa Law School in 1951, and was a member of Phi Delta Phi law fraternity.

He married Coleen Lou (Allbert) June 2, 1951, in Ames.

He practiced law in Ames from 1953-94, as a partner in the Hirschburg, Reynolds, Gilchrist, Nutty and Smith firm.

He was a member of Ames Public Library Board and the Ames Real Estate Assessment Board of Review. He was a 74-year member of First United Methodist Church, and a long-time member of Ames Noon Kiwanis. He also was active in the Ames Foundation and Green Hills Owners Association.

He is survived by his wife, Coleen; three sons, Peter (Pamela), of Eagan, Minn., Thomas (Michele), of Gilbert, Ariz., and William (Tracy), of Ames; and six grandchildren, Natalie, Emily, Tom, Elizabeth, Matt and Jake.

He was a loving husband and devoted family man who was always there for the people he loved. He will be greatly missed.
