Gladys M. (Hyler) Tice, 93, of Davenport and long-time resident of Ames, died Sunday, Oct. 8, at Genesis Medical Center West Campus in Davenport. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the service on Wednesday at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Gladys M. (Hyler) Tice was born March 23, 1913, in Nevada, the eldest child of Peter C. and Sophie Farni. She attended Milford Township School in Story County. The family moved to Ames in 1928.

She married Joseph P. Hyler Dec. 13, 1930, from which two daughters and one son were born. He died Jan. 10, 1963. She married Harold J. Tice Jan. 16, 1972; he died July 14, 1992.

Gladys was a homemaker and worked privately as a seamstress in her home while raising her family. She was employed by J.C. Penney Co. in Ames until she retired in 1975. During World War II, she did alterations for the sailors from the V-12 Navy Unit, stationed at Iowa State College. She loved doing handiwork and made many beautiful quilts, of all sizes as a hobby, and also collected thimbles and antique furniture.

She was a member of First Christian Church for more than 50 years, past matron and 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, past high priestess, 50-year member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Royal Order of Amaranth, Social Order of Beauceant, all in Ames; and member of the Daughters of the Nile in Des Moines. She was the recipient of The Grand Cross of Colors from The Order of Rainbow Girls and served on its advisory board for many years. She also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Lyle) Zugg, of Davenport, and Mary Jo (Ivan) Rhode, of Shippenville, Pa., one daughter-in-law, Jan Hyler, of Red Oak; eight grandchildren, Steven Zugg, of Mulberry, Fla., Vickie (John) Hagen, of Davenport, Rick Zugg, of Wichita, Kan., William Zugg, of Lutz, Fla., Jeff (Barb) Hyler, of Geneva, Ill., Julie (Eric) Fitzhugh, of Indianola, David Rhode, of Cuthbert, Ga., and Matthew Rhode, of Lima, Peru; two great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; two step great-granddaughters; two sisters-in-law, Jean Farni, of Minnetonka, Minn., and Corrine Hyler, of Des Moines; one brother-in-law, John Williams, of Lakewood, Colo.; plus many nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one son, Eugene J. (Jack) Hyler on March 18, 1991; two sisters, Bernice (Jay) Hutchison and Helen (John) Williams; and one brother, Edward (Jean) Farni.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Runge Mortuary and Crematory in Davenport was in charge of arrangements.
