LeRoy A. Downs, 71, of Ames, died Sunday, Sept. 17, at his home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at First United Methodist Church, with Chaplain Henrietta Klarenbeek officiating. Burial will be in Story Memorial Gardens Cemetery.LeRoy A. Downs was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Kelley, to Walter and Hazel H. (Swanson) Downs. He graduated from Huxley High School in 1953 where he was involved in basketball and baseball. He attended Des Moines Area Community College and earned an associate's degree. He also completed many specialty classes while working.
He farmed for a while before working at the Iowa Department of Transportation. He began working for the Ames Police Department in 1958; he retired in 1994.
He served in the U.S. Army from September 1953 to March 1955 in the Special Troops Command.
He married Ada Spencer Sept. 9, 1960, in Blue Earth, Minn. He loved all of the outdoors and especially enjoyed golfing, boating, camping and motorcycling. He was a member of Ames Police Association, Iowa Police Chiefs Association, American Legion, Blue Knights and Retreads
He is survived by his wife, Ada Downs, of Ames; children, Dan (Sharon) Spencer, of Loveland, Colo., Deborah (Dennis) Bohlken, of Anamosa, Tad (Deb) Downs, of Ames, David Downs, of Ogden, and Tina (Rob) Tweedt, of Ankeny; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gene, of Centerville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Ryan Spencer; and one granddaughter, Shian Downs.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, with family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at Adams Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to Heartland Senior Center.
