Verna Halverson
Verna Victoria Halverson, 86, of the Madrid Nursing Home, died Thursday, Aug. 24, at the nursing home.
Verna was born March 25, 1920, in Ogden to Gunnar and Edna (Anderson) Young.
She worked at Blue Cross-Blue Shield and 23 years as payroll clerk at John Deere. Following her retirement in 1982, she worked at the Slater Public Library.
Verna married Everett R. Halverson in Des Moines on Dec. 23, 1945. They farmed in the Kelley, Huxley, Slater area. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Verna is survived by her sons, Gary, Rodney (Janice) and Dana (Dorene), all of Slater; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn (Jerry) Persons of Anaheim, Calif.; two brothers, Gunnar (Helen) and Warren (Marcella) Young, both of Madrid; one sister-in-law, Irene Alleman of Ankeny; and brothers-in-law, Murl (Esther) Halverson of Nevada and Howard Buckley of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth Grimm and Virginia David; and her husband, Everett in 1973.
Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 27, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 28, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater with the Rev. Heidi Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Slater Municipal Cemetery.
Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are requested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Slater Municipal Cemetery Lighting Fund.
