Bertha Nolta

Bertha L. Nolta, 96, of Independence, Iowa, and formerly of the Zearing and Brandon, Iowa areas died Tuesday afternoon, August 22, 2006 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a short illness.

Bertha was born on September 11, 1909 in Colo, Iowa the daughter of Fred W. and Lena (Meisenbach) Kutter. She graduated from the Colo High School and received her teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school in the Story County area, and was united into marriage to Leighton Nolta on June 4, 1938 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo, Iowa. The couple made their home in State Center, Iowa prior to moving to Brandon, Iowa in 1949. She taught school in Raymond, Iowa and was housekeeper for the Mental Health Institute in Independence, IA. In 1974 she moved to Zearing, Iowa living there until coming to Independence in 2000.

She is survived by three children; Robert (Sandra) Nolta, Independence, IA, Sr. Rose Therese Nolta, Waukegan, IL, and Richard (Colleen) Nolta, Brandon, IA, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leighton in 1963, her brothers; Fred and Adam Kutter, and her sisters; Rose Sparrow, Josephine Nowlan, Minnie Sauser, and Mary Hoel.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in State Center, Iowa with Rev. John Herzog officiating. Burial will be in the St. James Catholic Cemetery, Colo, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, Iowa, and from 9 A.M. till services Saturday at the church in State Center. A rosary will be recited at 4 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be recited at 7 P.M. Friday at the funeral home in Independence.
