THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, August 26, 2006.

Joseph C. Picken Jr., 89, of Ames, died Saturday, Aug. 26, at Green Hills Healthcare Center. Memorial Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church. Private family inurnment will be at the Iowa State University Cemetery.

Joseph Picken Jr. was born in Des Moines on March 20, 1917, to Anna Mary (Pinkerton) and Joseph C. Picken Sr. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1934. He then attended Iowa State University where he earned his bachelors degree in 1939. He received his Ph.D. in 1948 in chemistry and biochemistry.

He married Dorothy M. Parrish March 15, 1941. The couple had been married for 65 1/2 years. Joe was employed by Iowa State University as a professor of biochemistry in the College of Veterinary Medicine Research Institute from 1947 to 1968 and was Vice President of First National Bank of Ames from 1968 until he retired in 1984.

Joe was a member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church of Ames, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Order of The Knoll, Phi Kappa Phi, ISU Alumni Association, ISU Museums, AIOFA, ACTORS and Playmakers.

Joe is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Ames; one son, Joseph C. Picken III, of McKinney, Texas; one daughter, Barbara Christensen, of La Pointe, Wisc.; seven grandchildren, David (Annalyn) Picken, Matthew (Jo) Picken, Anna (Clark) Twiddy, Christopher Picken, Leah (Charles) Christensen-Dean, Shane (Victoria) Christensen and Shawn (Dawn) Christensen; eight great-grandchildren, Noah, Bailey, Joshua, Zoe, Alex, Emma, Alexandra and Trevor; and one sister-in-law, Beth Parrish, of Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Joe's name may be directed to Youth and Shelter Services of Ames or Collegiate Presbyterian Church of Ames.
