THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, August 25, 2006.

Vera Louise Semler
Feb. 18, 1917-Aug. 23, 2006
Vera Lousie Semler, 89, of Story City, made the transition to her heavenly home Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. She died unexpectedly of a heart attack. Her life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City.

The daughter of George and Nellie Fry, she was born Feb. 18, 1917, on a farm near Frytown. She was the second of seven children. She attended rural schools in that area and was valedictorian of her class at Central High School. After attending Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, she taught in a rural school for three years.
She was married to Charles E. Semler for 54 years and invested her life in her family. Cub scout den mother, band mother, prom banquet planner and many other activities of her children were ways that she devoted her time and energy. She loved to garden, especially growing raspberries and strawberries and generously shared her homemade jam. She was well known for her beautiful china painting (which was on the cover of the P.E.O. Record), her porcelain dolls and her Hardanger embroidery. The past two years, she won six ribbons (three blue) and two Best of Show in the Hardanger category at the Iowa State Fair. Traveling and bird watching also were pleasures. She was a loyal 50-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter FZ, the Boone China Painting Club and Grace United Methodist Church.

She will remain in the hearts of her daughter and son-in-law, Corrine and Mac Jones, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; son and daughter-in-law Charles and Cheryl Semler, of Story City, and son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Mary Lou Semler, of Hampton; four brothers, Arlo (Helen), Earl (Norma), George (Harriett) and Daryl (Angie); one sister, Delores Paulsen; eight grandchildren, Lisa, Todd and Bryce Jones, Stephanie Fournier, Christine Semler, Jennifer Walker and Scot and Lauren Semler; and six great-grandchildren, Paxton Jones, Charles and Victoria Fournier, Eric Dowe, and Lucas and Jacob Walker. Her friends were precious to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Alene Millice.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Story City Library or the charity of choice.
