Janette Evelyn Nelson, 81, died peacefully Thursday, Aug. 3, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral servies will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. Visitation with family present will be from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson.

Janette Evelyn (Siver) Nelson, daughter of John and Grace (Kohl) Siver was born Aug. 30, 1924, on her parents' farm in rural Mechanicsville. She graduated from Morley High School in 1942, where she was a member of the marching band and played basketball. She attended Cedar Rapids Business College and worked as a secretary. She married Magnus Nelson June 25, 1944, in St. Louis, Mo., before he left to serve our country in World War II. They moved to Jefferson in 1948, where Magnus secured a position as director of elementary education. He died June 7, 1975.

She was active in community and church affairs. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years and served as church secretary for 16 of those years. She loved her church. She also was a member of Chapter CZ - PEO, Ingleside Club, Greene County Hospital Auxiliary and Garden Club. She was an avid Iowa State men's basketball fan. In 2003, she moved to Bethany Manor. She continued to be involved in many social activities during her residence there. A favorite activity was Bell Choir.

She is survived by two sons, Owen Nelson, of Union City, Calif., and Steven Nelson, of Vancouver, Wash.; one daughter, Carol (Larry) Jahn, of Ames; one sister, Velma Magnuson, of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, Jefferson Public Library or Bethany Manor Chaplaincy Fund.
