Gale W. Clem

Gale W. Clem, 94, of Ames died June 10, 2006, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services are being held today, June 15, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial is in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Gale was born in Ames on April 5, 1912, to Richard Rueben and Hattie Adele (Woolsey) Clem. Clem lived his entire life in Ames and was a graduate of Ames High School. He was owner of Pammel Grocery Store at ISU; prior to that he worked at Corwin Cleaners in Des Moines for 11 years. He retired in 1977.

Gale married Valora Jean Akin on January 30, 1940, in Bethany, Missouri. His grandparents came to Iowa in 1952 in a covered wagon from Indiana. His family was very important to him. He celebrated his 94th birthday with family and friends. A family tradition he started 20 years ago was having Sunday brunch together. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Golden K Kiwanis of Ames and Red Friars. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, dancing, music and playing the banjo. He had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include Bee Rouze, a longtime companion; five children, Richard (GeAnna) Clem of Ames, Deanna Clem of Ames, Gary (Sue) Clem of Nevada, Marilyn Clem of Ames and Margo (Gary) Eckley of Ames; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded by his wife, and two brothers, Clyde and Glen.

Adams Funeral Home, Ames, is handling arrangements.
