THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, April 21, 2006.

Leone Brekken, 83, of Story City, passed away Thursday, April 20, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 24, at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Randall. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Leone Brekken was born March 24, 1923, to Tom and Lottie (Thompson) Monahan in Watertown, S.D. She was educated as a teacher and a nurse. Leone married Jay Brekken Aug. 26, 1950. She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and lived in Randall from 1950 to 1975. Leone and Jay then moved to Story City. Leone was active in her church, the 6K Study Club and the Sons of Norway. She also worked part time at Jay's law office. She was fluent in the Norwegian language and loved to travel and play piano. Leone was known for her baking, especially kringla for her grandchildren. She was always interested in her children's and grandchildren's various events.

Leone is survived by her husband Jay, of Story City; her daughter, Beth (Dr. Tom) Masterson, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; her son, Todd (Donna) Brekken, of Omaha, Neb; two sisters, Eunice (Jerry) Dahl of Santa Anna, Calif., and Shirley (Norman) Sandager of Mesa, Ariz; two brothers, Gene (Lois) Monahan of South Shore, S.D. and Sherman Monahan, of Omaha, Neb.; a special aunt, Edna Loddigs of Golden Valley, Minn.; and four grandchildren, John Masterson, Lisa Masterson, Sara Brekken and Troy Brekken.

Leone was preceded in death by her parents; two infant daughters, Jean and Joan; and precious granddaughter Lindsey Ann Masterson.

Memorials may be designated to Elim Lutheran Church or Waldorf College.
