Thomas Glenn Huggins, 65 of Shelbyville KY, died Wednesday April 5, 2006 at Jewish Hospital in Shelbyville KY. Tom was born December 21, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa the second child to Glenn and Helen Huggins of Maxwell, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Janice Thompson on July 29, 1961. He served in the US Army beginning in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1964. During this time Tom and Janice received the blessings of the births of their three children, Thomas G. Huggins Jr. on February 7, 1962, Michael S. Huggins, on January 5, 1963, deceased January 6, 1963, Theresa L. Huggins on May 17, 1964. Following military service Tom received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Iowa State University and continued study toward his Doctorate of Limnology at the University of Southwest Louisiana. Tom began his public career in 1974 with Central Hudson Gas & Electric in Poughkeepsie, NY as an Environmental Scientist. During his career he held progressively increasing levels of accountability as District Manager, and Manager, Purchasing, Buildings and Grounds, Fuels, and Storm Services. Tom retired from Central Hudson after 28 years of service in February 2002. Tom belonged to several professional societies. They included American Fisheries Society, North American Benthological Society, Limnology and Oceanography Society, Empire State Energy an Power Association, New York Power Pool, Hudson River Environmental Society, Hudson River Estuarine Management Council, Adirondack Lakes Survey Corp, National Rifle Association, the American Legion, and a former member of Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department. Tom’s private life was one focused on his family. He had a love for gardening, animals, collecting American Indian artifacts, pre-1964 firearms and had a certain knack for the restoration of early American oak furniture assisted at every turn by Jan. Tom is survived by wife Janice of 44 years. Two children, son, Thomas G. Huggins Jr. of Mason, OH, daughter, Teresa L. Poehlein of Shelbyville, Kentucky. Five Grandchildren: Jacob Huggins, Collin Huggins, Zachary Poehlein, Mackenzi Poehlein, and Shelbi Poehlein. Brother, Donald G. Huggins of Lawrence, Kansas. Tom is pre-deceased by child, Michael, parents Glenn and Helen Huggins, an infant brother, and sister, Susan Bell.
