Rozella Holden, 89, of Valley City, N.D., and formerly of Oriska, N.D., died Monday, March 20, at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday March 29, in St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Oriska, N.D., with the Rev. Timothy Johnson celebrant. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, in the church. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Oriska, N.D. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City and one hour prior to services Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning at the church.
Rozella Schultz was born March 15, 1917, the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy (Foertsch) Schultz at Mantador, N.D. Her parents died when she was a child. A graduate of Valley City State Teachers College, she taught in Eckelson, N.D., where she and Palmer met. They were married April 1, 1942, at Fort Sill, Okla. Palmer spent nearly three years with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, and when he returned they purchased a home in Sanborn, N.D., where they lived until they moved 10 miles north of Oriska, N.D., in 1953. She was a respected and loved educator who taught school for 34 years in Eckelson, Sanborn, Wimbledon, Fingal and Walhalla, N.D., and in Effie and Tintah, Minn. A wartime injury forced Palmer to retire in 1975, and complications set in and he died August 31, 1975. She continued to make her home on the farm until moving into Valley City in 1996. She was a member of the REACH Foundation, FACE (Foundation Advancment for Catholic Education), St. Bernard's Parish in Oriska, N.D., and St. Bernard's Ladies Aid. She had been the past president of the Sanborn-Eckelson American Legion Post Auxiliary, was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Valley City Flower Club and the Weimer Homemakers.She is survived by her three children; Palmer Joseph (Sheryl) Holden of Ames, Dorothy Lina (Jack) Orts of Oriska, N.D., and Mary Karol (Thomas) Olson of Jamestown, N.D.; one brother, James Schultz of St. Paul, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Erika (Charles) Bartunek, Robert Orts, Daniel (April) Holden, Clare Olson, Teresa Olson, Monica Olson, Alexa Orts, Timothy Olson and Michael Orts; and two great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Grace Bartunek.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer; her parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
