THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, March 23, 2006.

Barbara Wheelock Askelson, 81, died peacefully Friday, March 17, in Fort Worth, Texas, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Barb was born in Nevada, to Gertrude and John Wheelock. She lived most of her life in Ames, working for Northwestern Bell for more than 30 years, before moving to Fort Worth three years ago to be closer to her daughter and family. She was a long-standing member of Saint Cecilia's Parish. She was a strong and nurturing mother, raising two daughters in the 1950s and 1960s as a single, working mom. She took great pride in her family and particularly relished time spent with her grandsons and, over the past 10 months, her great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy, and her parents.

She is survived by six sisters; one daughter, Mary Beth Hartman and husband Phil; grandson Tim; grandson Jonathan and his wife Denise, and great-grandson Jensen, all of Fort Worth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Saint Cecilia Catholic Church.
